Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

I was chuffed to little mint balls - as we used to say Up North - to see that my novel has finally appeared on my German publisher's website. It's real. It's got pages. My name is on the cover. Okay, so it's not out until next September, but it exists and that'll have to do for now.

I called it My Future Husband, but the German interpretation is quite different and roughly translates as 'Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained' (I think!)

There's no hint of the time-travel contained within its pages, but I'm not complaining. Oooh no. I'm just really happy to see it.

"Sprechen die Deutsch?" means "Do the Germans speak?". I think most of them do. Certainly the ones I've met love to speak. "Sprechen Sie Deutsch" means "Do you speak German?", which I suspect is what the title should have been.

As for "Wer nicht küsst, der nicht gewinnt", I think it means "who doesn't kiss, doesn't gain". My German is very rusty, so I wouldn't trust my translations too much.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zu Ihrer Publikation!

That's great news! I wanna read the book but don't sprechen the slightest bit of Deutsch, beyond being able to ask for two beers please (which I can do in the language of every country I've visited, getting my priorities right!)
Hope for stratospheric German sales so some red-faced Brit publisher snaps it up.

Captain Black - thanks for correcting my appalling translation, which I'm tempted to blame on Google!
