Good news

Well, I didn't win the Novelicious competition (flicks away a tear) but thank you everyone who took the time to comment and vote for me, and congratulations to the winners (she says through gritted teeth.)

No, I mean it - the standard was high and I wouldn't be at all surprised if some deals are struck in the not too distant future.

On the plus side  ... whispers ... I have a lovely new agent!   I submitted my second novel - part of my German deal - a few months back and tried to forget about it.  It attracted interest, I completed some edits, and on Tuesday was offered representation.  Tiny squeal.

The contract arrived today and I'm meeting her in London next Wednesday.

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but feel like a very lucky lady indeed.

In other news - I've mastered the hula-hoop to the point where I can do it for half an hour ... without even noticing.  It's not even like proper exercise, but my waist has shrunk and I've got a six-pack.

Okay that last bit's a lie, but I wouldn't want one anyway.  I might be tempted to keep showing it off, and start parading around in a crop top without my cardi.  In the library.

Which wouldn't do at all.

Oh many, many congratulations Karen. A new agent. What wonderful news. You so deserve it.
Bad luck on Novelicious but just make sure you finish what you started. I can't stand the withdrawal symptoms much longer!!
The very best of luck with all your projects in the future :o) xx

That's wonderful news about the new agent, Karen. You must be so excited! xx
What great news about the agent - and that more than make up for not winning the comp! I'm really impressed with the hula hooping - wonder where I could get one!

Wow, well done about the hula-hooping! You must be over the moon!

Such great news!

Oh, and the new agent? That's kinda cool, too. :-)

A new agent is completely ace - you must be so thrilled. Really pleased for you, yay!

Bit impressed about the hula hooping too. But don't forget that this is England : keep that cardi buttoned up at all times.

Fantastic news about the new agent, Karen.
All I'll say about the hula hoop is... I'm jealous you can do it. I never could even when I was 'in me youth'.
Congratulations! Hopefully, the new collaboration will produce a UK contract. Let us know!!!

I rather like women with six-packs*.

Bad luck with the competition but very well done with your novels and getting a new agent. I'm sure you know this already, but it might be a good idea to get your contract checked over by the SoA.

* Actual six-packs, that is. Of beer.

Congrats on your new agent and your book deal in Germany! I am also going to be published in Germany first - still looking for that elusive UK deal.

Brilliant news and so very well deserved too. Congratulations! *skips, claps and cheers* x
Huge congratulations on new agent!Have a terrific & productive meeting on Wed.

And a half-hour hula-hooping is astonishing! I'm very proud of two and a half occasional twirls - most of the time it's on standby with mini-trampoline...

Congratulations Karen, that must be just the best feeling! I've just found your blog and judging by that, I'd say the agent catching is richly deserved. Just off to find the hoola hoop that lives in the study and is most often to be found wedged between the hoover and a stack of old picture frames from ebay which might-come-in-useful-one-day.
Go celebrate!

Fantastic news about the agent - congratulations, Karen.

And well done on the hula hooping. I used to be great at it - but the talent has disappeared at a rate inversely proportional to my growing waist.

100th Post!

100 posts! This time last year I was a Blogging Virgin. Now I’m a bit of a slag. It’s become the highlight of my week, both reading yours and writing mine. Which means either:

a) I don’t get out much
b) I don’t get out much, or
c) I don’t get out much

(I think it's C)

This was my first ever post. Not a single comment did it receive. I dry-heaved into my hanky for an hour and considered leaving the country. Then I cottoned on to leaving comments in order to entice readers over.

Anticipating disappointment, outrage or (worse) apathy, I was pleasantly surprised to trap some lovely Readers in my cage of blathery nonsense. I nearly threw a Comments Party, but daren't push my luck.

It’s been a real journey, as they say on bad reality TV (is there any other sort?) On the way, I’ve been given some fantastic advice from you lot, as well as from a Real Published Author and more importantly I've learned that…

Q&A with Amanda Brittany

I'm thrilled to welcome Amanda Brittany to my blog today, to talk about her debut thriller Her Last Lie.

It's been described as 'gripping with a shocking twist' and I can confirm that it is!

(It also has an amazing cover)

Which character in Her Last Lie would you like to meet?
Hi Karen, thank you for inviting me to your blog.
I suppose feisty Roxanne is the character I’d most like to meet. She’s so determined to get to the bottom of things, and appears to be a good friend to Isla.
There are definitely a couple of characters in the book I would hope never to meet.

I know the book has several settings, which did you enjoy writing the most?
I loved writing the second part of the book set in Abisko in Sweden. I visited Abisko a couple of years back, and it was great fun bringing the cold, bleak landscape to life, and describing the way The Northern Lights swoop across the night skies.
Are any of your characters based on people you know?
No, not at all, they all sprang from my imagi…

It's (not-even-nearly) the Season to be Jolly...

I know it's only September, but my new book THE BEACHSIDE CHRISTMAS is out today. It's the final in the Beachside series and writing three books in a year means I've been pretty immersed in this world.
10 things that stand out about writing this series are...
1. The Beachside Sweet Shop gave me the perfect opportunity to make some coconut ice. I used to help make it with my grandmother growing up, and it tasted exactly as I remembered
2. Also, in the course of research, I tried eating pear-drops to see whether I’d grown to enjoy them – I haven’t. I always preferred chocolate and still do.
3. Shipley, the setting for the series, is based on Swanage in Dorset, one of my favourite places to visit, but I changed the name so I could use some fictional license when it came to naming and placing pubs and shops.
4. I don’t have green fingers so there was plenty of research involved in writing The Beachside Flower Stall. I loved learning the meanings and symbolism of various flowers …
